Psychologically Healthy Workplace Awards

APA's National Psychologically Healthy Workplace Award

State Award

On March 4, 2006, the American Psychological Association (APA) presented its first annual National Psychologically Healthy Workplace Awards at a special ceremony during the APA Practice Organization's annual State Leadership Conference in Washington, DC.

Candidates for the award came from the pool of previous State-Level Psychologically Healthy Workplace Award winners and were evaluated on their workplace programs and policies in the following areas: employee involvement; health and safety; employee growth and development; work-life balance; and employee recognition. Additional factors that were considered included employee attitudes and opinions, the role of communication in the organization; and the benefits realized in terms of both employee health and well-being and organizational performance.

Following a competitive evaluation and selection process, top candidates from the following organizational categories were selected for national recognition by the American Psychological Association:

  • Large for-profit (1,000 or more employees)
  • Medium for-profit (250-999 employees)
  • Small for-profit (fewer than 250 employees)
  • Not-for-profit
  • Government/military/educational institution

By recognizing the "best of the best" for their outstanding, comprehensive efforts to create a positive work environment, the American Psychological Association hopes to demonstrate via examples the variety of ways that organizations of all types can take care of their employees while at the same time enhancing their bottom-line performance.
