Summary

Focuses on the current trend to charge tobacco-using employees a penalty or greater premium rates. While some organizations have chosen to implement this policy, other organizations have chosen not to implement it. Organizations that have begun charging tobacco users a different rate have also begun to fine, suspend, and terminate employees that provide false information about their tobacco use. Organizations that refuse to implement similar policies argue that to do so is to interfere with personal lifestyle decisions. In the end, organizational wellness initiatives need to be tailored to the organizational culture and must be communicated appropriately to employees. Furthermore, penalties and incentives must be enforced to have the desired effect.
