Summary

Focuses on a recent report released by NIOSH. This blog attempts to synthesize that report and provide recommendations for future research needs. Training is viewed as one way to reduce workplace injury, illness, and death. The author provides a summary of the NIOSH report, concluding with several recommendations for future research studies: (1) investigating factors associated with optimal intervals for refresher training, (2) better defining the concept of training engagement, (3) more broadly assessing pre-training factors that contribute to training success, (4) discriminating among various elements in the training process (e.g., methods, delivery, media), (5) more thoroughly investigating factors that influence training transfer, (6) assessing the role of national culture in training effectiveness (especially as culture relates to perceived acceptable risk), and (7) attempting to validate broad training models.

"When you have a high level of employee involvement in regards to the decision-making and problem-solving; and, when employees know that they are not alone to deal with their personal issues; and, when they see opportunities to become healthier with their employer's help; then, that business will be able to count on its greatest resource, its employees."
