| Summary | Focuses on the issue of online training programs. According to the author, online training provides a breadth of options that are not available in a traditional format. The author suggests that the most important issue is to make sure a clear goal for training is established. Because there are so many options available, an organization needs to make decisions about what to offer based primarily on what the organization is trying to accomplish with online training. Once a clear goal is established, an organization then needs to decide what format(s) online training will take. A variety of options exist including e-learning, virtual meetings, and informal discussion boards. In addition, some online training includes a combination of formats. Finally, when attempting to develop and deliver the program, an organization needs to decide who will do what. Will the entire training be outsourced? Will the software system be purchased, while in-house employees develop the content? Again, there are a variety of options at this stage, and each comes with benefits and disadvantages. Hence, when moving to online training, an organization needs to have a clear picture of what it wants that training to look like. |
